You Think You Can't, You're Right" ~ Henry Ford

Glutathione and Fertility:
Glutathione, also known as GSH, is our body's most powerful antioxidant and performs many vital functions. Glutathione detoxifies and protects cells from the damage caused by oxidative stress, toxins and radiation by free radicals. It decreases inflammation and strengthens the immune system. Glutathione levels in the body rapidly decline as we age, leaving cells vulnerable to attack. This process is accelerated by factors such as stress, cigarettes, alcohol, medication, poor diet, exercise, environmental toxins, chronic illness and injury. By the age of 40, most people are severely depleted in Glutathione, resulting in reduced energy levels, inflammation and acceleration of disease processes.

Oxidative stress is thought to be significant in both male and female fertility and complications associated with pregnancy & that low levels of glutathione is linked to these playing a role in affecting sperm and egg quality and function. As forementioned, glutathione reduces oxidative stress caused by free radicals by neutralising them. Where development and growth of the baby is concerned, glutathione helps to regenerate other antioxidants like Vitamin C and Vitamin E, thereby increasing protection of both mother and baby against the harmful effects of free radicals.

Every month the female ovaries create approx 10 - 20 follicles containing immature eggs. Normally only one of these follicles goes on to create a fully mature egg which has the potential to be fertilised by a sperm.
Studies have shown that low concentrations of glutathione in the follicle may affect the egg's ability to be fertilised.

Oxidative stress is thought to play a significant role in male fertility, with low Glutathione levels affecting sperm quality and quantity.

Glutathione is what binds the sperm to the egg during fertilisation.
