Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is an assisted form of conception. During IUI, your physician will place washed sperm into your uterus at the time of ovulation. Sperm are then in the right place at the right time when your egg travels down the fallopian tube. This procedure is sometimes combined with fertility drugs to increase your chances of conceiving.
For IUI to work, your fallopian tubes must be open and healthy. To find this out you will need to have a laparoscopy (a kind of keyhole surgery to determine patency or a hysterosalpingogram (a kind of xray). IUI is not recommended if both tubes are scarred or have adhesions that might stop an egg from travelling down the fallopian tube. If however, you have one Fallopian tube working and an ovary on same side, IUI may be an option for you.
Depending on your fertility problem, you may require fertility drugs together with IUI treatment. Using fertility drugs is called a stimulated cycle. ie the drugs stimulate ovulation. If drugs are not used, it is called an unstimulated cycle or natural cycle.
IUI may also be an option for single women using an anonymous donor through a fertility clinic.
