Miscarriage is the loss of a baby before 20 wks of pregnancy. Miscarriages are very common and often women miscarry before they even know they are pregnant. If the miscarriage is in early pregnancy ie before 14 wks, it is generally due to the embryo not developing properly. The most common cause is chromosomal defects. If the miscarriage occurs later in pregnancy (> 14wks), it is more likely due to a health problem with the mother rather than the baby.
Miscarriage can be very devastating for the parent/s especially when it is a planned birth. There are many factors that can predispose a woman to miscarriage, some of which are listed below. There are resources available to help with the aftermath of the loss.
